Anubis-Nout by Gerard Grisey

Pretty awesome bass clarinet solo I found last night!

  1. Interesting!

I noticed some discussion in the Youtube comments about whether this was being performed by contrabass clarinet or bass clarinet... which do you think?

  2. Grisey is such a cool composer. We should look at more French spectralist music in Studio Class, but the scores are hard to get in the US. I'll have to see what I can dig up.

  3. I started listening to Grisey's Quatre chants pour franchir le seuil (Four Chants for Crossing the Threshold), and it too is proving to be interesting. The first movement has some very neat layering/comparison of the timbres of the soprano and brass.

  4. I am 90% sure it is bass clarinet. I think the confusion stems from the harmonics and overtones that the score calls for, but when I heard it on Q2, the DJ announced it as solo for bass clarinet.

  5. If you like that, I bet you will like this gem by Lee Hyla.
